Dr. Perry-Rivers is actively engaged in student engagement, service, and academic research.
She teaches the College of Business capstone course Organizational Policy & Strategy, and courses in Entrepreneurship, and Organization Theory. Every semester in the capstone course, she engages students in a culminating service-learning experience in which students use their management education to serve the community by developing a strategic plan for an organization committed to redressing a pressing social problem. Her students have developed strategic plans for a regional community action agency that administers Head Start and other programs for the working lower-income, a non-profit organization that provides mentorship for at-risk girls, a prospective “Agrihood” committed to simultaneously providing affordable housing and redressing the food deserts affecting Richmond’s urban communities, and more.
Dr. Perry-Rivers serves as the Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, and is responsible for oversight and development of the Center’s programs, educational offerings, web and social media presences; publication of substantive entrepreneurship research; and maintaining vital relationships with the entrepreneurship academic and practitioner communities.
Her research efforts focus on minority entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial strategy, and corporate social responsibility. Her research is published in reputable peer-reviewed journals, including Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice and the Journal of Ethics and Entrepreneurship, and has been presented at several noteworthy academic conferences, including the Academy of Management annual conference, the United States Association of Small Business Educators (USASBE) annual conference, the Society for the Advancement of Management (SAM) conference, and the annual Social Entrepreneurship Conference sponsored by New York University and Northeastern University.
Prior to becoming an academic, Dr. Perry-Rivers had 10+ years of experience in corporate marketing and advertising, including having worked for the Virginia Pilot Newspaper, the daily newspaper in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach market, and part of the large media conglomerate that owned the Weather Channel. She is also a former, successful entrepreneur who owned and managed a real estate team generating over $16 million in annual sales and which, in the early 2000s and in its first 3 years of existence, ranked in the top 10% of realtors within a top forty U.S. market. In her corporate and entrepreneurship roles, she was responsible for generating and/or managing millions of dollars, hundreds of clients, and very high levels of productivity.
