Proctor retired as executive editor and vice president of the Richmond Times-Dispatch in June 2011, ending a journalism career spanning 40 years. After launching REDDjobb and teaching as the Donald Reynolds Visiting Professor of Journalism at Washington and Lee University, he returned to journalism in July 2012 as the executive editor of Lake Norman Publications, a group of weekly and monthly newspapers in the region north of Charlotte.
Proctor spent 10 years at The Star-Ledger in Newark, NJ, as city editor, assistant managing editor/local news and associate editor. He was assistant managing editor/metro at the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle and business editor at the Louisville Courier-Journal.
At the Akron Beacon Journal, Proctor was a reporter and night city editor. He shared in the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for the Goodyear takeover story. He is a five-time Pulitzer Prize judge.
