Spring 2015 Student Accomplishments

The Reginald F. Lewis College of Business at Virginia State University celebrated the following spring, 2015 student accomplishments.

(1) Veronica Roache (Management major) participated in Project Shadow with Evan Kaufman (Executive Director) of the Hopewell Downtown Partnership.

(2) Kevin Kidd (Agribusiness major) participated in Project Shadow with Karen Aylward (Assistant Director) at Chesterfield Economic Development.

(3) Racheal Ajibolade (MISY major), Trevon Byron (Management major), Jay Davis (MISY major), Terrance Hobson (MISY major), Sam Kelly (Management major), Kianna Rodrigues (Marketing major), and Crystal Truesdale (Management major) participated in a PRO networking session at the Bull and Bear Club in Richmond with twenty-five small businesses.

(4) Tiara Green (MISY major) participated in the 1 Million Cups Networking Session in Richmond and interfaced with twenty businesses to include our friend Dale Fickett, Executive Director of RVAWorks, i.e. the City of Richmond’s business incubator.

(5) Sam Kelly (Management major) participated in a Red Cross Advisory Board meeting with Rosalyn Andrews (Chief Administrative Officer) for the Red Cross and joined Red Cross staff for a dinner.

(6) Over fifty students participated in New York Life Day with Dale Matheney in Singleton.

(7) Thirty-five students participated in the God and Mambo book signing with author Meriel Martinez.

(8) Thirty-five students in Social Entrepreneurship hosted Bethany Miller (Vice President) of Greater Richmond Partnership of Virginia for fun hands-on workshop exercises regarding economic development.

(9) JeJuan Griffin (Management major) has earned an internship in VSU Capital Outlay/Facilities where his responsibilities will regard Environmental Management.

(10) Twenty students in Advanced Information Security and Assurance hosted Ronnie Fowler (Data Techician) at the Federal Reserve in the classroom.

(11) Shantell Johnson (Management major and 2013 grad) has earned a job as a Photographer at Strawbridge Studios.

(12) Stacey Davis (Management major), David Ghartey (MISY major), Ai’Jalon McGhee (Management major), Jenae Moore (Management major), and Justin Murchison (MISY major) have been cast for a new City of Petersburg TV commercial.

(13) Kayla Peck (Accounting major and 2014 grad) has earned a position as a Graduate Research Assistant at George Mason University.

(14) Five students hosted Ditu Kasuyi (Procurement Officer) at DLA for a workshop regarding Operation Hope.

(15) Joseph McKay (Accounting major) has earned a job as a Mental Health Technician at Poplar Springs.

(16) Jahmica Ragsdale (Management major and May 14 grad) has earned a job as an IT Support Technician at SAIC.

(17) Aqilah Bullen (Marketing major), Tarik Floyd (Marketing major), Sam Kelly (Management major), Kenneth Mills (Marketing major), and Briana Taylor (Marketing major) participated in a roundtable conversation at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Brandcenter with marketing executives. The students spent the day meeting with industry, faculty, and students to include a tour of the facility.

(18) Over sixty students participated in Federal Reserve Day to include interviewing for accounting and IT positions. It should be noted that our own Jessica Cox (Marketing major and 2013 grad) and Danielle Mason (CSCI major and 2014 grad) joined us. Jess manages Events Coordination for the Fed and Danielle works in IT.

(19) Brianna Flores (Marketing major) participated in Project Shadow with Keenya Kelly (Owner of Return of the Curl).

(20) Vossy Vernardo (Marketing major) participated in Project Shadow with JoLynn Holcomb (Manager of the Ettrick and Enon libraries). Vossy earned an internship with the visit, Vossy will intern for the Chesterfield Library System.

(21) Abolade Ajibolade (MISY major) visited Matoaca High School and recruited students to the College of Business at VSU and secured 25 commits from folks to visit with us to include acquiring all of their contact info. We have already contacted each of the students and initiated correspondence pertinent to logistics.

(22) Cornelius Barnes (MISY major) and Tiana Grayson (Management major) participated in the Beta Gamma Sigma Winter 2015 Leadership Forum held in San Diego.

(23) Danielle Chambliss (Accounting major) has earned an Accounting position at Allmond & Company for after graduation.

(24) Lamarcus Wise (Marketing major) has earned a paid internship with Webbright Services where his responsibilities will include managing a blog.

(25) Over thirty students in Social Entrepreneurship hosted our friend India Parson (Founder and Owner of Building Economic Stability Together or BEST) in the classroom for a fun hands-on session.

(26) Over forty students visited with our friend Derius Swinton (Author of SOAR) for a book signing.

(27) Dominique Vest (Marketing major and 2012 grad) has been hired as a Student Trainee in Financial Management at Fort Lee’s Defense Contract Management Agency.

(28) Andre Garvin (Marketing major and Dec 12 grad) has been hired as a Wealth Advisor for GreyCliff Advisory Group in Manhattan.

(29) Najee Saunders (Marketing major and May 14 grad) has started his own catering business in Richmond, Remix Catering Services.

(30) Malcolm Paul (Management major and May 14 grad) has been hired as an Accounting Assistant at ABT Associates in Bethesda, Maryland.

(31) Shanikka Richardson (Marketing major) participated in a FBLA event as our representative at Matoaca High School. Shanikka judged high school students on their sales speeches and customer service skills. For us it constituted another recruitment opt.

(32) Shanikka Richardson (Marketing major) and Atiya Leach (Marketing major and 14 grad) participated in a UFSC networking event with twenty professional in Richmond. Thereafter, Shanikka and Atiya participated in a State Farm networking event (also happened to be at same location, i.e. American Tap Room).

(33) Marnelle Fanfan (Management major and 14 grad) just returned from her home country of Haiti. Marnelle was recognized for her philanthropic campaign, Toys for Haiti.

(34) Rahsheed Toliver (Management major and 14 grad) has been hired as a Finance Specialist at Northrop Grumman.

(35) Larry Brown (Management major and 13 grad) has been hired as an Axiom Educator at Axiom Educators.

(36) Kera Bridges (MISY major) interviewed for full time positions at Bankers for Life and ThreeS.

(37) Cierra Wilson (MISY major and 13 grad) has been hired as Patient Access Database Analyst at the UVA Health System.

(38) Marnelle Fanfan (Management major and 14 grad) and Natan McKenzie (Marketing major and 11 grad) participated in the Petersburg Chamber 20/30 networking session in Petersburg.

(39) Sam Kelly (Management major), Jade Mims (Management major), Jasmine Mims (Management major), and Tarasha Pierce (Management major) joined Governor Terry McAuliffe for the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner. Our students were singled out for their contributions to the community.

(40) Cornelius Barnes (Management major), Tiana Grayson (Management major), Jasmine Johnson (Accounting major), and Corey Peoples (MISY major) were the Top Performers in Small Group Role-Play with Industry as assessed by Wells Fargo, MeadWestvaco, Liberty Mutual, International Trade Association, Dunlap & Partners, Guardian Life, Fort Lee Credit Union, U.S. Army, Austin Brockenbrough & Associates, and Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

(41) Lamarcus Wise (Marketing major) has earned a paid internship with the SOAR Group.

(42) Over thirty students in Social Entrepreneurship hosted Evan Kaufman (Executive Director) from the Hopewell Downtown Partnership in class.

(43) Monet Graves (Accounting major) was the Top Performer in Small Group Role-Play with Industry as assessed by Northrop Grumman, Dale Carnegie, Make A Wish Foundation, City of Richmond, Office of Senator Mark R. Warner, SCORE, Auditor of Public Accounts, Wells Fargo, and ABO.

(44) Chad Flucas (Marketing major and Dec 14 grad) has been hired by Enterprise Rent-a-Car for the Manager-in-Training program.

(45) Over ninety students hosted Dr. Pamela Hammond, Interim VSU President, for remarks. The occasion regarded an Alumni Advisory Board workshop consisting of fourteen accomplished alums.

(46) James Barber (Management major), Trevon Byron (Management major), Andrew Clarke (Management major), Akira Grigsby (Management major), and Kianna Rodrigues (Marketing major) along with John Alexander (Management major and Dec 14 grad) participated in Project Shadow with Mark James (Owner of Hearth and Home Shoppe) along with Bryan and Teresa Mueller (Owners of The Closet Factory).

(47) Kineka Berry (Marketing major), Tiana Grayson (Management major), and Corey Peoples (MISY major) were the Top Performers in Small Group Role-Play with Industry as assessed by H&A Architects and Engineers, Civitas Health Services, WalMart, City of Petersburg, Logistics Management Resources, Mastec, Special Olyms, BEST, EWaste, and Dynex Capital.

(48) Over sixty marketing students participated in VCU Brandcenter Day with Hawley Smythh (Recruiter from the VCU Brandcenter) to discuss graduate school. Additionally, the students in Brand Management hosted Hawley in the classroom.

(49) Raven McGriff (Accounting major) has earned a paid summer internship in logistics at WalMart in Georgia. Raven joins Sylvia McHerron (Management/HR major) in interning for the Manager-in-Training program at WalMart Logistics this summer. Sylvia will intern in South Carolina.

(50) Shaniece Pugh (Management major) interviewed for a summer internship with Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

(51) Kera Bridges (MISY major) interviewed for the Project Coordinator position with VSU Technology Services.

(52) Over fifty students visited with our guests from Guardian Life to include interviewing.

(53) Briana Taylor (Marketing major) participated in a luncheon with Lamees Abrouhouma (Owner of Webbright Services). Briana is being considered for a blogging internship.

(54) Marshawn Shelton (Management major) has earned a summer internship with AT&T. The internship will include training in multiple cities.

(55) Marshawn Shelton (Management major) and Derrick Thomas (Marketing minor) have earned internships for the semester at GOAL High Performance Sport Specific Training.

(56) Robert Dinh (Management major), David Ghartey (MISY major), Philandra Jordan (MISY major), Latasha Richardson (Management major), Vossy Vernardo (Marketing major), and Wesley Wright (Accounting/Finance major) participated in a film shoot for the new VSU commercial.

(57) Shareef Hood (Management major), Sam Kelly (Marketing major), and Shanikka Richardson (Marketing major) hosted Raekwon Davis (Hopewell High School senior) for a recruiting visit on campus.

(58) Over seventy students participated in The Fastest Way To Win in College Day to include a book signing by Terrell Jones (VSU alum, 2010) and Cyber Security Officer at the Department of Medical Assistance Services.

(59) Over thirty students hosted Cherry Hedges from Virginia Credit Union in Personal Money Management. Kudos to Sara Reese for putting together!

(60) Shanikka Richardson (Marketing major) helped to host Mike Matthews (President & CEO) and Patti Davison (VP for HR) of H&A Architects and Engineers for a meeting to develop appreciative inquiry for the College.

(61) Our students’ entrepreneurial spirit and attributes persuaded Enterprise Rent-a-Car to commit to investing $5,000 in our new Entrepreneurship Center. It should be noted that Imani Bullen (Marketing major and May 14 grad), Tiffany Gullins (Marketing major and May 14 grad), Kamesha Gibbs (Marketing major and May 14 grad), and Colisha Davis (Management major and Dec 14 grad) are all performing well as managers for Enterprise. Additionally, Tiana Grayson (Management major) performed very well in her internship this past summer.

(62) Cornelius Barnes (MISY major), Kineka Berry (Marketing major), Tiana Grayson (Management major), and Corey Peoples (MISY major) were the Top Performers in Small Group Role-Play as assessed by Mazda, Dominion, CP&Y, Weather’s Engineering, Michael Baker International, Ameritone, and Minority Supplier Development Council.

(63) Shaniece Pugh (Management major), Marshawn Shelton (Management major) and Derrick Thomas (Marketing minor) have earned internships at BizSource. For Marshawn, this constitutes a second internship in that he additionally interns for Sun Management.

(64) Deonesha Williams (MISY major) has earned a summer internship at John Deere. Deonesha currently interns for the U.S. Army in logistics.

(65) Allison Selby (Management major) has earned a position as a Representative at Poplar Springs in Petersburg. Additionally, Allison interns for State Farm.

(66) Fifty-six students (mostly MISY) interviewed with the senior leadership team from General Electric (GE) as a part of GE Day. Additionally, over sixty students hosted GE in the classroom today to include in Database Design and Applications and Professional Enhancement.

(67) Over thirty students hosted Aimee Turner (Director of Public Relations for Richmond International Raceway) in Professional Enhancement.

(68) Over seventy students participated in T-Mobile Day to include interviewing and winning prizes.

(69) Diamond Sykes (MISY major) interviewed for a full-time position subsequent graduation at Oracle.

(70) Kera Bridges (MISY major) interviewed for a full-time position subsequent graduation with Computer Resource Team.

(71) Carl Capel (Accounting major), Shanikka Richardson (Marketing major), and Megan Sias (Marketing major) helped the College launch VSU’s initiative to promote the City of Petersburg’s new I AM PETERSBURG brand.

(72) Ten students hosted Joe Brisby (Regional Leader for SCORE) in Strategic Marketing.

(73) Brian Redd (Management major) passed his UPS management exam and is now eligible to be a manager at the Willis Road location where he has been working.

(74) Lamar Gumbs (Marketing major), Vossy Vernardo (Marketing major), Shaniece Pugh (Management major), Marshawn Shelton (Management major), Derrick Thomas (Marketing minor), Lamarcus Wise (Marketing major), and DeAnna Waters (Management major) interviewed for an internship with GOAL High Performance Sport Specific Training.

(75) Over seventy students participated in an Operation Hope workshop to include remarks by Ryan Mack.

(76) Marnelle Fanfan (Management major and Dec 14 grad) has been offered an Operations Manager position at State Farm. Marnelle currently works for the City of Petersburg as Operations Manager for Tourism. Marnelle will be deciding on her future in the coming days.

(77) Philandra Jordan (MISY major), Latasha Richardson (Management major), Vossy Vernardo (Marketing major), and Wesley Wright (Accounting/Finance major) were cast for the new VSU commercial.

(78) Cory Lane (Marketing major and Dec 14 grad) has been hired as a Claims Adjustor at Nationwide Insurance. Cory has interned for Nationwide for the last two years; the internship has now materialized in a full-time position.

(79) Mykala Daniel (Marketing major) has earned an internship at Big Brother Big Sisters for the spring semester. Mykala this past summer interned for Free Agents Marketing.

(80) Tarik Floyd (Marketing major) has been offered a marketing summer internship in Bethesda, Maryland at Marcus and Millachap.

(81) Sudie Baynham (Marketing major) interviewed for a position at Executive Placement.

(82) Shanikka Richardson (Marketing major) hosted Derius Swinton, President of the SOAR Group on campus to initiate development of a marketing plan.

(83) Corey Peoples (MISY major) passed the CompTIA Network+ certification. The Network+ certification is an internationally recognized validation of the technical knowledge required of foundation-level IT network professionals. The Network+ certification ensures that the successful candidate has the important knowledge and skills necessary to manage, maintain, troubleshoot, install, operate and configure basic network infrastructure, describe networking technologies, basic design principles, and adhere to wiring standards and use testing tools.

(84) Kera Bridges (MISY major) participated in Project Shadow with Jason Dean, State Farm Agent. Kera has prior insurance experience from her internship at Farmers Insurance.

(85) Akhenaton Blye (Management major) has been offered a position in the Office of the Governor. Akhenaton began with a Project Shadow visit that turned in to an internship that has now turned in to a job.

(86) Javay Porter (Accounting major) has earned a position as a Senior Risk Coordinator at Capital One.

(87) Brittany McKenzie (Accounting major and May 2013 grad) has been hired as a Financial Services Specialist at the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. Brittany previously was an Associate Accountant at the Virginia Housing Development Authority.

(88) Racheal Ajibolade (MISY major), James Barber (Management major), and Sam Kelly (Management major) joined Governor McAuliffe and President Hammond for a major economic development announcement in Petersburg with our friend Dave McCormack.

(89) Nahja Marinnie (Management/HR major) participated in a networking session with fifteen entrepreneurs in Richmond at the Bull and Bear Club. Additionally, Nahja had an opportunity to participate in a commercial shoot.

(90) Jimmy Brown, Nicole Layne, Dennis McRae, Shakiyla Wallace (all Accounting majors) and Antavia Stevens (Management major) interviewed for an internship at Johnson Funeral Home.

(91) Thirty-five students in Social Entrepreneurship hosted Will Correll (Founder of Buskey Cider) and Dale Fickett (Executive Director of RVAWorks) for conversations regarding entrepreneurship.

(92) Philandra Jordan (MISY major), Antavia Stevens (Management major), and DeAnna Waters (Management major) won the CIAA Tourney. Philandra and Antavia play point and DeAnna plays off-guard.

(93) John Alexander (Management major and 14 grad), James Barber (Management major), Trevon Byron (Management major), Andrew Clarke (Management major), Akira Grigsby (Management major), and Kianna Rodrigues (Marketing major) were profiled in the Hearth & Home Shoppe newsletter.

(94) Kashema Pearson (Management major and 12 grad) has earned a position as a Program and Projects Coordinator at the Academy of General Dentistry in Chicago.

(95) Fifteen students interviewed with ESI and Gabriel Perry, Vice President.

(96) Over sixty students met with Frances Hill, HR Manager at Degremont Technologies and participated in a pizza party.

(97) Jimmy Brown (Accounting major) interviewed with Genworth Financial.

(98) Jasmine Mims (Management major) was offered a full-time position at State Farm. Jasmine has been interning for State Farm.

(99) Janeva Benson (Marketing major) has been offered a part-time position at the Petersburg Chamber of Commerce. Janeva previously interned for the Chamber.

(100) Kevin Kidd (Agribusiness major) has been invited to interview at Smithfield Foods.

(101) Vossy Vernardo (Marketing major) has been offered an internship at Accel Talent and Development Group.

(102) Timothy Blanks (Management major and 14 grad) has been hired by the U.S. Army for a civilian logistics job at Fort Lee. Specifically, Timothy has been accepted in to the prestigious Post-Grad Logistics Internship Program.

(103) Vossy Vernardo (Marketing major) participated in the Cameron Foundation’s Artspace meeting to develop plans for launching a new branding campaign for the City of Petersburg.

(104) Jasmine Taylor (Management/HR major and 14 grad) has been hired as a Clerk at the Dauphin County Courthouse in Pennsylvania.

(105) Sam Kelly (Management major), Dennis McRae (Accounting major), and Asjah Royal (Management major) participated in a breakfast meeting with Jay Stegmaier (Chesterfield County Administrator) along with 100 other governmental and business leaders.

(106) Corey Peoples (MISY major) is participating in Project Shadow with Felipe Wright (Owner of E-Waste).

(107) Vossy Vernardo (Marketing major) participated in Project Shadow today with Pam Allen (Owner of Accel Talent Group).

(108) Over thirty students interviewed with Altria to include with Brittany Grimes (Unit Manager and Marketing major and 08 grad). Additionally, Brittany taught thirty students in the Brand Management class.

(109) Jay Davis (MISY major) and Tarik Floyd (Marketing major) participated in the Urban Financial Services Coalition Speech Competition held at SunTrust’s downtown headquarters. Sylvia McHerron (Management/HR major) won the national competition last year and will be the MC this evening to be attended by leaders in the finance industry. Additionally, Latanya Williams (Management major) was our videographer for the event. Both Jay and Tarik advanced to the next round in D.C.

(110) Shanikka Richardson (Marketing major) interviewed for a post-grad marketing position at Inbound Central in Richmond.

(111) Philandra Jordan (MISY major) and Darryl Reynolds (MISY major) participated in an Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) Cybersecurity Workshop and Networking Session in Short Pump.

(112) Akira Grigsby (Management major), Gloria Parham (Management/HR major), Sylvia McHerron (Management/HR major), Jade Mims (Management major), and Jasmine Mims (Management major) participated in a HR Workshop and Networking Breakfast tomorrow morning at John Tyler Community College being hosted by Virginia’s Gateway Region.

(113) Alexis Coleman (Marketing major) has earned a promotion at UPS and will now join the Management team.

(114) Jasmine Mims (Management major) interviewed for a position at Wells Fargo this Wed morning.

(117) Tiara Green (MISY major) had her second interview for an IT position at the Federal Reserve in Richmond. She is a finalist.

(118) Aicha Camara (Management major) and Iris Harris (Management major) participated in a Ribbon Cutting at The James House’s new facility and networked with 150 regional business and political leaders. See attachment for the ladies with our own Eldon Burton and Suzanne Jackson (CEO of John Randolph Medical Center).

(119) Thirty-five students in Social Entrepreneurship hosted Jim Pourteau (Owner of True Leadership Coaching) in the classroom.

(120) Forty-five students in Professional Enhancement hosted Dale Matheney (Agent at New York Life) in the classroom.

(121) Monet Graves (Accounting/Finance major) and LaMarcus Wise (Marketing major) participated in the Virginia’s Gateway Region Annual Dinner and Awards Banquet with three hundred leading industry professionals at the Petersburg Country Club.

(122) Tiffani Jones (Management major) has earned a summer internship as an Assistant Examiner at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

(123) Diamond Sykes (MISY major) has earned a position for after graduation as a Database Application Engineer for Oracle outside of San Francisco.

(124) Gardy Saturne (MISY major) represented Virginia State University for a recruiting event at Huguenot High School in Richmond. Gardy helped host a workshop for fifty high school seniors.

(125) Fifteen students in Career Launch along with the Men of Troy hosted seven 5th graders from Ettrick Elementary for workshops on the VSU campus regarding professionalism and presentation. Industry facilitated said workshops that included both the children and undergrads.

(126) Over forty students participated in State Farm Day to include being awarded portfolios by Jessie Bell (Recruiter) and William Green (Agent and alum).

(127) DeAndre Delaware (Marketing major) and Tiana Grayson (Management major) were the Top Performers in Small Group Role-Play with Industry as assessed by Dominion, Bubble Soccer, Alstom Power, Chesterfield County, Dreyfus, Winter HR Consulting, and Bryant & Stratton College.

(128) Tionna Chambers (MISY major) participated in Project Shadow with Pete Olson (Regional Sales Lead) for Lumos Technologies.

(129) Shanikka Richardson (Marketing major) has been offered a post-grad internship at Inbound Central to do marketing in Richmond.

(130) Dorrell Myers (Marketing major and 12 grad) has been hired as a Technical Support Coordinator at Capital One.

(131) Quinton Bankhead (Management major), Tionna Chambers (MISY major), Alexis Coleman (Marketing major), Jay Davis (MISY major), Allison Selby (Management major), and Adrian Serry (Accounting/Finance major) interviewed with Maggie Hoge (Recruiter) from Dominion.

(133) Kevin Carter (Accounting major), Jhadee Gordon (Accounting/Finance major), Monet Graves (Accounting/Finance major), Sam Kelly (Management major), and Kianna Rodrigues (Marketing major) participated in the Metropolitan Business League Annual Awards Dinner with 300 hundred professionals.

(134) Onyi Obioha (Management major) participated in Project Shadow with Jennifer Procise (Operations Manager ) at Swift Creek Mill Theatre.

(135) Alanda Petes (Management major) has earned a paid summer internship at the Dixon Mason Group to be the Community Events Coordinator.

(136) Jay Davis (MISY major) and Deonesha Williams (MISY major) participated in the Encorepreneur networking session at the Diamond with over eighty business persons.

(137) Kianna Rodrigues (Marketing major) and Crystal Bacon (Manufacturing Engineering major and 14 grad) participated in the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce networking session at the Torque Club with forty five businesses.

(138) Ashton Holland (MISY major) has earned a paid summer internship in IT at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.

(139) Chelsea Jackson (MISY major and 14 grad) has been hired as an Automation Engineer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond.
